Uses For Allopurinol Posts in Questions
My dog formed a xanthine stone when on allopurinol. Vet said no more allopurinol. Can I just stop its use? I am wondering if allopurinol has to be gradually discontinued or if I can stop its useage cold turkey. Thanks.

DeeDawg replied: "didn't you ask your vet this when they told you to stop the drug?"

Launi replied: "Ask your vet! Often, you can just stop the medication but there are some you have to back off of slowly and one is Predisone. So call the vet."

what drug one should take with or before Allopurinol? do you know which drug should be taken with Allopurinol (anti Gout drug) to prevent the gout attack? because use of this drug alone in the beginning of the treatment can provoke the attack as well! so a uricoseuric drug should be added, right?

Nikki0707 replied: "I am sure it is mainly Colchicine taken with this drug, it is more for the pain and the treatment of Gout, and contains properties of prevention aswell. This does not reduce the Uric acid though, thats what your Allopurinol does."

colchicine vs allopurinol for gout? My doc put me on colchicine daily for my gout and he told me that he would rather me have the squirts from colchicine than to have bone marrow loss from allopurinol. I need advice from someone who has been on gout meds for a long time cuz i still have problems with gout for 3 years now and have never used allopurinol.

May replied: "Colchicine is used only during acute gout attacks. Allopurinol disrupts uric acid production and its effect on bone-marrow is minimal. Colchicine has worse side-effects when compared to Allopurinol!! Ur doctor seems to have been certified before the discovery of Allopurinol, that's why he fears using it!"

Craig replied: "I think you need to get a second opinion. Colchicine is usually and generally only used in the short term to initially get over gout. Allopurinol is a drug that is much better for long term use."

how can i construct allopurinol from benzene? what reactions am i going to use? what could be the synthesis?

tgypoi replied: "Allopurinol? Sounds like you're saying hello to some weird ass organic thing. Check Ullmann's and Vogel's, it'll be in one of them."

fong_zhikang replied: "I suppose that it cannot be done. Though both of them have something to do with drugs, they are not quite linked to each other. Allopurinol is a white, powdery drug that is used to treat gout. Benzene is it is an important industrial solvent and precursor in the production of drugs an important precursor in the production of drugs."

bootleg replied: "not a single clue"

What color are Allopurinol pills supposed to be? I used to get white, now they're peach.? Thank you ALL for your help. "Dr. Mag" gets best answer only because I considered who has been the most helpful to others on this site in addition to the answer itself. Everyone's best answer percentage was evaluated. Thank you all for your kind input though.

karonj replied: "Perhaps you got a generic prescription. Call and double check with your pharmacist. Better to be safe than sorry."

mlgable replied: "Look at the prescription lable and see what company makes them. Most likely they are a different brand of Allopurinol tablets. If you are unsure then take the bottle to the pharamy you got them from and have them check the pills for you."

Pharm D replied: "Allopurinol pill can be any color how ever most are white. Call you pharmacy that you got the medication and ask them to double check. More than likely the pharmacy has changed manufacture of the allopurinol. same medication form a different company may and usually looks different"

DR. MAG replied: "Allopurinol is generic,so several companies can produce it. whatever peach or white it is the same, unless it is expired."

gout cured by eating foods low in purines and without using medications, anyone? I was recently diagnosed with gout. My doctor mentioned using Allopurinol, but I would prefer to try eating low purines (veges, milk protiens, etc, no alcohol). first, and hopefully not use the medication I have done the research, and I know supposedly diet only controlds about 15% of uric acid , but has it helped anyone to the point that they did not need medication? thanks for your answers

duskosavic2000 replied: "Hi, Food certainly is a factor with gout. However, if you want to, you can reasearch alternative medicine fields such as homeopathy in order to get real help, quick. Some of the remedies you would need are Urtica Urens, Benzoic Acid, as well as several remedies for cleansing both the liver and the kidneys. My site is not specifically about gout but is about applying alternative medicine techniques to gynecological problems. Several of these techniques can be applied to gout too, for example, Reiki, Su Jok as well as herbal remedies. Don't be afraid to experiment with new healing techniques, they would't exist if they werent useful to people. You can search for something like homeopathic remedy gout and see what comes out. Wishing you all the best with your healing Sincerely, Dusko Savic"

shahriar a replied: "there are two types of gout 1.acute gout2.chronic gout acute gouty attack can involve any healthy individual following a high purine diet and alcohol consumption.but in chronic gout there is an special defect in metabolism of purines. There are 3 types 1)a genetic defect 2)renal deficiency 3)lesch nyhan syndrome 4)previous chemotherapy if you have not previous history of gout in your parents and duration between attacks are not too close and they are not severe you may controle it by diet .If it fails you have to recieve allopurinol and/or a uricosuric agent like probenecid or sulfinpyrazone, based on your kidney function level.Always remember: avoid dehydration and drink a lot of water during the day."

Medical treatment using a combination of drugs? My elderly Mother has recently been admitted to hospital with suspected renal failure. She had been prescribed the following medicines by her GP,Furosemide, Digoxin, Ramipril, Rosiglitazone, Gliclazide, Atenolol, Allopurinol, Aspirin & Cyclizine. She had been admitted two weeks previously complaining of stomach and chest pains. I have written to the GP concerned who refuses to reply. I would like to know what effect the drugs listed would have as each was to be taken 4 times a day i.e. a total of 36 tablets daily. Please help.

chapaton replied: "There's no way that each has to be taken 4 times a day. I would more carefully read the instructions on your mother's pills. Atenolol is a beta blocker meant to keep the heart rate down, once a day.....unless otherwise prescribed Aspirin should only be taken once a day..... The glitazone is for diabetes Furosemide is a loop diuretic to reduce water Digoxin is a heart failure helper ramipril is an ace inhibitor. sounds like your mom is diabetic, high blood pressure, and in heart failure. Her kidneys are going probably secondary to all of that. Check out the pills. They aren't all to be taken 4 times a day, perhaps that is your mom's problem. Also HIPPA laws forbid a doc to talk about a patient, unless the patient releases the info."

Lady Jane replied: "There are many health websites that show drugs and there meanings and are very informative.Try a Yahoo search and you will come up with loads."

lyn replied: "SOME DRUGS HELP BUT 36 A DAY. PILLS TAKE LONGER TO GO THROUGH AN OLDER PERSON THAN A YOUNGER PERSON. I THINK DR. GIVE WAY TOO MUCH DRUGS. IF SHE'S IN THE HOSPITAL OR NURSING HOME YOU DON'T HAVE MUCH SAY, BUT IF YOUR TAKING CARE OF HER, YOU CAN CUT DOWN ON SOME OF THESE. A LOT OF THESE DON'T REACT WELL WITH OTHER MEDS. YOU CAN LOOK THEM UP ON THE NET. I'VE SEEN PEOPLE CONFUSED BECAUSE OF ALL THE DRUGS THY WERE TAKING."

Violet replied: "I don't know what effect the drugs would have, it sounds as if your poor mum has blood pressure and heart trouble, my parents took some of the drugs you mention for these complaints. If the doctor refuses to answer your query you could contact the local health authority, or get in touch with NHS Direct (the number should be in the phone directory) They answer all sorts of queries."

RMD replied: "She is going to need to see a kidney specialist. I do not know if you have one in your area. The specialist that you need is called a Nephrology specialist. She also may need heart and GI specialists. I realize that it is a lot of medications, but they all have a purpose. They will be able to get it all straightened out. Good luck and God Bless you both go to they will be able to give you a bit of direction."

sharonrnprn2003 replied: "furosemide (lasix) is a diuretic to prevent fluid overload, digoxin is to improve contractility of the heart muscle, atenolol is to control her blood pressure to prevent strokes, aspirin thins the blood to prevent blood clots, allopurinol is for gout.....your mother has several health problems which occurs with age.............people are living longer now due to the combination of drugs....my great grandmother died of congestive heart failure at a young age...36 due to lasix or other antidiuretics had not been discovered yet...medical science has improved greatly in the past 50 years.....if you wish to research all this go to your local community college and check out books on geriatric diseases and drug handbooks.........also a book on medical terminology so you will have a better understanding of the terms used.......hope this info helps you........"

darr65 replied: "well you can google any of these drugs (look them up on google.com) to get what each of these drugs do and their side effects and everything. That isn't very professional of her GP to not be available for questioning. Another source you can go to is contact your pharmacist about questions about any of these drugs. They will give you very accurate info about all of these pills."

Cotes du Rhone girl. replied: "Why not talk to a pharmacist? They are the drug experts. Take the medication with you, together with the instructions you were given. Every pharmacy has a pharmacist, some even have private rooms to discuss the medication that has been prescribed. Your poor mum sounds quite ill."

bernie c replied: "A similar thing has just happened to my mum ask to see the pharmacist for a medicine review and also bloods taken the furosimide can effect potassium levels so get her blood done right ask for the u and e and also esr that was told for me to do please don;t take no for an answer as I stuck my ground and it did help am not medically trained STICK YOUR GROUND you only have 1 mum the doctors have lots of patients good luck and take care"

andyp2904 replied: "Furosemide is a diuretic, it gets rid of "fluid" in the body, often from the lugs or lungs from heart failure. It is usually taken once or twice a day. Digoxin in a drug to try and slow down an irregular heartbeat, taken once a day. Ramipril is a bood pressure lwering tablet, taken once a day Rosiglitazone is a diabetes drug ususally taken once a day. Gliclazide is a very popular diabetic drug taken up to twice a day. Atenolol is called a beta blocker and reduces blood pressure and can slow the heart a little. Usually taken once a day. Allopurinol is used to prevent gout. Aspirin in used to prevent platlet aggregation in the blood (in effect thining the blood, but not that simple) and is very effective in reducing heart disease. It is take once a day. Cyclazine is a anti-sickness tablet taken 3 times a day. It has some sedative properties. This is quite a typical drug list for an eldery person, seen with many, many people. You have not mentioned ANY doses. A person taken all these drugs 4 time a day is NOT reading the instructions on the packet or those given to them by their GP. They could suffer many effects from extreem low blood pressure to low blood sugar reading. Souind like this person needs a medication review to me, with an understanding relative to help her understand what she should b taking. Prehaps a daily pill box would help."

FIONA S replied: "your mother's doctor can not discuss her with you unless she gives her permission or unless you have power of attorney. the regime she is on seems pretty normal...i will send you a detailed message of what all the drugs are for if you want....................she should ask for these to be given to her in a dossette box ( the chemist fills in the daily doses ) so that there can be no mistake."

Fi replied: "Your mother has both high blood pressure & type 2 diabetes, so this explains the need for the frusemide, ramipril, atenolol, gliclazide & rosiglitazone. In addition, many elderly patients are given aspirin once a day as this has been shown to be beneficial to the heart in trials. Her allopurinol is to treat gout, digoxin treats atrial fibrillation or heart failure & the cyclizine will help with nausea. Most of these drugs are NOT to be taken four times a day, so she should not be taking so many tablets; your mother may be confused - this is understandable. Are you completely sure it is the tablets making her feel unwell? You will need your mother's consent for her GP to comment on her treatment, as that is confidential information - maybe that is the way forward. Or you could ask your local pharmacist for their opinion on dosages & frequency of your mother's medication (take the boxes with the dosage labels on). Particularly ask in reference to aspirin & gout.....They will also be able to help you select a box system for you to help measure out your mothers tablets into daily doses for her, this ensures she is taking the right mediactions at the right time. Good luck."

i have gout and live in a med. marijuana st. can use it for the pain? i'm 50 and have had gout for many years and don't take allopurinol because it upset my stomach could i use it for my upset stomach and the pain?

gillianprowe replied: "If you stick to the Gout Diet, your symptoms will improve."

JeffKan1 replied: "I have no idea if marijuana will help the pain of gout. The answer above is correct about diet being a good thing in the long-term to help with gout, but just changing your diet isn't going to help you make it thru today or tomorrow with the pain. Try indomethacine, colchicine from the doctor. Those are both good for the attacks. Sorry to hear the allopurinol upsets your stomach. Drink lots of water, 1 oz for every 2 lbs of body weight. And in addition to avoiding bad gout foods and eating good gout foods, google on "gout nettle" to see some other things you can take daily that might help keep that dang gout pain from coming back. Good luck to you!"
